Diagnosing Problems

Why is My Pool Foamy?

No one wants a surprise foam party. Often times, the fix is simple, but the first step is diagnosing why your pool is foaming, and sometimes that can be tricky.

Pool foam is one of those problems that can arise suddenly and turn an otherwise inviting pool into an uninviting “bubble bath”.

Foaming is often caused by a high amount of organic material in the water which can quickly cause chemical levels to become out of balance.  When your water is not properly balanced, your sanitizer can’t work efficiently. Shocking the pool with chlorine can often help quickly reduce the foam as it breaks down foam-causing contaminants like hair care products, body oils and more.  Next, make sure your water chemistry is in balance.  Basic water chemistry levels should be maintained at:

  • Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • pH: 7.4–7.6
  • Calcium Hardness: 200–400 ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid: 30–50 ppm
  • Chlorine: 2.0–4.0 ppm
  • Total Dissolved Solids: 0–2500 ppm for non-saltwater pools.

Sometimes, foaming can be caused by the use of law-quality algaecides.  Changing to a high-quality algaecide may clear the problem up quickly and prevent the same problem from reoccurring.

Low Calcium Hardness may also play a role in pool water foaming.  When Calcium Harness is below the ideal range, your pool has soft water.  This can cause damage to pool surfaces over time and increase the water’s ability to foam.

Finally, if it appears that there are a large amount of bubbles in the pool, there could be an air leak in your pool pump or suction line.  An air leak can be as simple as a low pool water level.  If your pool skimmer is less than halfway submerged, your pool level is too low and air may be getting sucked you’re your system.  Adding water to the pool may fix the issue quickly.

If the pool water level is not the problem, components of your pool pump system may need to be examined to determine whether there is an air leak in the system.
